General Baby Photo Contest Tips (Info here)

In all mother's eyes all babies are the most beautiful.  Imagine how difficult it is for baby photo contest judges.  Things to consider for your baby contest photo are originality and photo quality.  Most judges evaluate the child's personality, expression, and emotion to gain an overall impression of the photo.  The more unique your baby photo is, the better your chance to win a baby photo contest.

While many baby photo contests may accept studio photos you should be aware that they don't do as well as snapshots because many of the props and background scenes in these type of baby photos have all been seen before.  You want the judges to see unique baby photos with lots of cute baby expression and personality.  It really doesn't matter if your baby is smiling or not so don't go crazy trying to force your cute one to give you that perfect smile. Baby contest photos with true everyday baby emotions are fine.  Including silly baby faces, sad baby faces, and every baby expression in between. Contest criteria may vary form one baby photo contest to another baby photo contest - but generally speaking, you want a unique photo, filled with baby photo personality.

Some contests love close up photos of your baby's face, but full body photos can do well too as long as they don't detract from the background scene in the photo.  It can be a bit of a balancing act between the attraction and distraction of the baby and the background scene. Do not to put your baby in front of a busy background scene that will take away from your his or her personality.  And don't overpower his or her personality with overly  frilly clothing and other accessories.  You want baby to be 'natural' ...  (tips for photographing twins)

Photo quality is extremely important.  Never underestimate the value of a high-quality camera, it's a tool and like most tools you get what you pay for.  Low quality camera equals low quality baby photo results.  High quality camera equals high quality baby photo results.  While it doesn't always mean you can't get a fantastic snap with a low cost camera though, there are times that you can.  Be sure to read your camera's manual and pay attention the tips that they give you.  And don't forget to fully understand your camera settings, because they effect the quality of your baby contest photo.

It's interesting that magazines not only host digital photography contests to find the best digital photos, they also have contests for other generally related areas. One of the most popular photo contests deal with 'editing' photos, or photo editing. Many of these digital artist contests are usually free to enter and have a number of many different categories (best background, best photo art design, and like best morphs, etc.).

Magazines may request a specific type of file format or file size, so it is important to know this information before you actual submit your contest photo.

Digital photo contests let everyday photo novices and fans get a chance to see their digital photos or digital photo art in print and win prizes. But before you do, be sure to check the rules and regulations for your particular contest.

There are some cases where a contest regulation states that once you enter a contest your image becomes their property (which means they can post it whenever and where ever they want). Some contests that are not completely honest may claim one hundred percent ownership of your picture or contest photo, so they can then sell your digital photo and take all of the profit. Be shrewd and careful about which contests you enter. And if you do have to sign something on the dotted line, make sure you understand what your signing.

Smile for the … phone? Webcam? There are many kinds of digital photo contests out there. Some don't  want you to use a regular digital camera.

To draw attention to these new camera phone models, some cell phone companies will create their own digital photo contest. Instead of using cameras, they ask contestants to use their camera phones. Before you enter you should be aware that these contests usually differ from the standard digital phone contests because of the they want you to use their product. So, before you fill out that entry form, make sure not only that your type of phone is acceptable, but also the model.

Digital photography has made it easy for people to take photos, and more importantly, to share them. The result is that a lot of everyday picture takers have turned in into photo-buffs. And photo magazines have fuel the fire by hosting free digital photo contests.

Digital photo contests may occur every month to follow a magazine schedule. Generally speaking, a contest is broken into several  visual categories (best landscape, best baby photo, sports shot, etc.). Prizes offered can range from money to photo trips and even cameras and equipment.. To enter, you can just follow the instructions listed in the magazine or on magazine's website, which usually amounts to sending in an image. In addition to winning prizes, the winning photos are usually posted in the magazine. Just remember If you have to send in an actual digital photo or prints in most cases the contest will not return the photo, be sure to make a copy.

Digital photo contests and baby photo contests exist in the professional realm too. Usually they are created for image-based industries like journalism, advertising, signage, etc.  Submissions are generally open to many companies.

If your company enters a photo contest, it is very important to keep in mind that there is usually a fee for participating. Agencies that win don't care as much about the actual prizes as they do about the 'pride'. It makes for great company resume material.  They earn the right to say they are an award-winning agency.

You can find photo contests and digital photo contests hosted by many companies, websites, photography associations, and even museums.  There are a variety of industries and commercial avenues that use these contests to increase their visibility to the general public.

Many of these photo contests give the 'starving' digital photographer a chance to show off their work. They are great if you are just trying to 'break in to the business'. If you're serious about working in the digital photography realm this could be your ticket in. If you win any of these contests it is a great addition to your resume.

Ringtone Tips (Info here)

Polyphonic Ringtones and MP3 Ringtones
The term "polyphonic ringtones" refers to ringtones which play multiple notes at once.  Polyphonic ringtones are more realistic than monophonic tones which play a single note at a time. Many newer model cellphones can play up to seventy-two notes at once.

Do not confuse polyphonic ringtones with MP3 ringtones or certain other formats that use real music or audio clips from actual songs or movies.  Cellphone ringtones that use .MP# files or .WAV do not rely on the phone to create tones like an actual musical instrument.  Polyphonic ringtones work by utilizing the cellphone's  software, rather than hardware, similar to a musical instrument.  These ringtones sound much more like a real song or real music, however they still have that artificial quality that takes away from "true sound" phone ringtones.

MIDI Ringtones
MIDI ring tones are created using software that tells the cellphone what sound (ringtone) to play from the cell phone.  MIDI is a normal format for polyphonic ringtones.  As far as sound quality think of your favorite song played on a toy piano.

Ringtone sites offer a selection of popular songs (real music) that have been "translated" into MIDI ringtones.  They do not sound like the original songs on your CDs or favorite radio station, but the essential melody has been converted into a monophonic or polyphonic version.  MIDI ringtones have risen in popularity because they generally take up less of your cell phone memory, but sound enough like the real music that is currently popular that cell phone owners want.

Ringbacks vs. Ringtones
Confused between ring back tones and ring tones?  A ringtone takes the place of the standard ring sound of your cell phone with a customized song sound or sound of your choice.  This can be a snip of movie dialogue, real music, a sound effect, or any sound converted to a ringtone format and downloaded to your cellphone.

A ringback tone is a customized sound file that plays to the caller when your phone actually rings.  It is the sound the caller hears in the place of the standard 'ring' sound as they wait for you to answer your cell phone.  There are a variety of sources and services to purchase both mobile ringback tones and ringtones.  There are free ringtones and subscriber based services that offer popular ringtones. Check a variety of ringtone sites before you buy tones, you may find some at no cost.

Survival Products and Emergency Gear (Info here)

Outdoor survival may seem frightening to some, but basic knowledge of a few techniques can save your life.  Always make sure you have a spare set of dry clothes with you, including t-shirts and trekking socks.

Learning how to make an emergency shelter is one such technique. Use a sheet, rope, and either poles or fixed natural objects such as trees to create a good makeshift shelter. The tips of hiking poles will help prop up your sheet. Trees offer branches and trunks that are great for tying down your lines. Use loose branches and/or rocks to anchor a line or weight down a sheet corner.

The concept of survival should extend to more than 'camping' or 'outdoor' -- it needs to include surviving an emergency situation in an urban sitting.  Such as lack of electricity, water, food, and the basic necessities of human survival.

Ask yourself:

  • Is food in America going to last forever?

  • Is clean drinking water going to last forever in America?

  • Did you know that large corporations have actually taxed 'rain water' in other countries.

  • Will you be able to grow your own food if the government requires you the pay for an annual license?

  • If the USD crashes, what will you use for money?

SurvivalOnlineUS has forums where you learn and teach survival methods and make others aware of emergency products.

Think Like a Boy Scout
Before you begin building your survival kit, you need to decide what its purpose is. Will it need to be small enough to put in your pocket, or will you be able to carry it in your backpack or a small daypack? If itīs for your pack, what will you have left over if you lose the pack in a stream crossing or through some other misadventure?

Your survival kits (the one in your pocket and the one you add to your pack) should change in content with the season. For instance, you will need more ways of getting fires started really quickly in the winter-time than you will in the summer, when you will want to trade out some fire-starters for insect repellents.

You should study survival techniques and tools like they will save your life ... because they just might!
